SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Family, friends and former colleagues from several Bay Area police departments gathered Thursday morning to remember Kevin Nishita, a beloved security guard and former Staff Sgt. police who lost their lives protecting a news team from a gunman in Oakland.
Hundreds of people were scheduled to attend a memorial service at the San Jose Civic which was scheduled to begin at noon. You can watch the service live on CBSN Bay Area starting with the funeral procession at 10 a.m.

Oakland homicide detectives continue to investigate the November 24 shooting. They released a photo of the suspect’s getaway car, but few other details.
Police said the suspect vehicle was a 2004-2008 white 4-door Acura TL with a sunroof and no front license plate.
Nishita was working as a security guard protecting a KRON4 news team covering a recent crash-robbery and seizure of an Oakland clothing store when an assailant attempted to steal the station’s photographic equipment.
He was shot dead while lying on the ground, suffering from an injury to his lower abdomen. Nishita succumbed to her injuries at 4:39 a.m. on November 27.
Before her death, Nishita made sure that her organs would be donated.
“He was always over the top but it was something you loved about him because you could always count on him,” his daughter Maureen Campos said.
During her career, Nishita also provided security for the KPIX 5 news crews, who fondly remembered her kindness.

“He was part of our new family. The loss is simply huge, ”KPIX reporter Maria Cid Medina said on Saturday.
She also attended the memorial and posted a tribute to Nishita on Wednesday.
Kevin Nishita wrote his own eulogy before his death. It is being read right now by a longtime friend during his memorial service in front of hundreds of people.
He also planned part of his funeral.

“It hurts to say ‘was’. He was just the nicest man, ”said KPIX reporter Andria Borba.
Nishita was a former police officer who worked for the Oakland-based Star Protection Agency California and is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
He was a San José Police Officer from 2001 to 2012. While there he worked as a Gang Investigation Detective as well as in the Gambling / Vice Unit.

Kevin has been a part of our San José Police family for eleven years, wearing the San José Police crest with great pride, ”said San José Police Chief Anthony Mata. “His infectious smile, his passion for serving others and his unmatched work ethic embodied the best of us all. As a patrol officer, gang detective, and as a person, Kevin has shown bravery, kindness, and dedication in helping to make San José a better place for everyone.
A press release issued by the security company noted that Nishita had also worked as a police officer with the Oakland Housing Authority as well as the Hayward Police Department.
