How to get your NHS Covid pass to show you’ve been vaccinated in Wales

People will need to show an NHS Covid Pass to enter nightclubs and events in Wales from October.

The decision was announced by Prime Minister Mark Drakeford during the last three-week review of coronavirus restrictions in Wales on Friday. You can follow live updates from his press conference here.

Some large events already require attendees to be fully vaccinated or to provide a negative test.

A similar program is introduced in Scotland from October 1. Under the UK government’s winter plan, vaccine certification will only be required for nightclubs and other major events in England if data suggests action is needed to “prevent unsustainable pressure on the NHS”.

Where will you need to show the pass in Wales?

The obligation to present an NHS Covid Pass will take effect from October 11. This means that everyone over 18 will need to have an NHS COVID Pass to enter:

  • Indoor and non-seated events for more than 500 people, such as concerts or conventions
  • Outdoor events without seating for more than 4,000 people
  • Any setting or event with more than 10,000 people present.

Fully vaccinated people in Wales can already download the NHS Covid Pass to securely view and share their vaccination status. It also allows people to show that they have tested negative on the lateral flow test within the past 48 hours.

Who can get an NHS Covid Pass in Wales?

You can get an NHS Covid Pass if:

  • you have been vaccinated in Wales or England
  • you are 16 years or older

If you have been vaccinated outside the UK, you must obtain proof of vaccination from the country where you were vaccinated.

The Welsh Government website says: “We continue to work with the UK government on a system and process to recognize vaccinations given outside the UK.”

How to access the NHS Covid Pass in Wales

You can access the NHS Covid Pass through the NHS website here. This will allow you to produce a COVID pass using a smartphone, computer or laptop.

To access the service, you will need to sign up for an NHS connection. You will need to upload a photo of your ID (passport, full UK driving license, full EU driving license).

If you live in Wales you cannot get it through the NHS app as it is only valid in England. This means that it is only available through the website and you will receive a code which you scan or download in pdf format.

If you don’t have photo ID, you’ll need to apply for an NHS COVID paper certificate.

Your NHS Covid Pass includes a barcode. The expiration date refers to the barcode and will be updated automatically. It does not apply to your vaccination status.

What you need when you log into the NHS site

When you log into the NHS site, they will want to associate you with your NHS case and ask you to provide your:

  • NHS number or name
  • Date of Birth
  • Postal code

The NHS number will give us the best chance of matching you with your NHS record. If you don’t know your NHS number, they can use your full name instead.

You will need a working cell phone with signal as they can text you a security code. They will then send you a QR code which you can scan to your phone or download. You can also request that it be sent to you by email.

Can you apply for an NHS Covid-19 paper certificate?

Yes, but you should only apply for a paper Covid Pass if:

  • you have received a full course of the Covid-19 vaccine (you must wait 5 days after your last dose before requesting it)
  • you are 16 years or older
  • you wish to receive a bilingual copy of the pass
  • you do not have photo ID

Call 0300 303 5667 to apply for a Covid Pass if you cannot use the digital NHS Covid Pass or if you want a bilingual certificate.

Obtaining a certificate can take up to 10 working days. No request can be expedited and certificates cannot be collected.

You can call 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Calls are typically billed between 2p and 40p per minute and are included in free calling plans.

General practitioners cannot provide letters indicating your COVID-19 status.

How long does the pass last?

The 2D barcode expires 30 days from the date of issue.

You can generate a new one by logging back into the NHS website and visiting the NHS COVID Pass section, then downloading or emailing a new PDF copy to yourself.
