‘Kiss and find out’

Since returning from a long break, Last week tonightJohn Oliver deftly busted right-wing hysteria over critical race theory and told former President George W. Bush to ‘shut the fuck up’ about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .

On Sunday night’s edition of his HBO show, he paid tribute to the brave people of Ukraine for fighting off Russia’s morally reprehensible military onslaught.

“Ukrainian citizens have continued to show incredible signs of resilience, proving that they are truly the Eastern European country that gets excited and educated,” Oliver said.

He then watched a CNN interview with a Ukrainian grandmother (and retired economist) showing the media the only weapons she had: cases of Molotov cocktails.

“Let that Russian shit come here,” she told CNN. “We are ready to welcome them.

The Russian government, meanwhile, has taken steps to criminalize any media criticism of their war on Ukraine, and has also banned Facebook and Twitter in the country. The Russian Ministry of Education even released an outrageous propaganda video featuring a little girl answering questions about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and getting some really bizarre answers.

“I have a question: ‘special operation’… what does that mean?” the girl asked. “That’s when the goals lead to peace,” replied the Russian official. not residential buildings. We don’t hit civilians. We don’t destroy social infrastructure – kindergartens, schools, water utilities, substations.”

Of course, all of this makes no sense.

“You literally just did almost all of these things!” exclaimed Oliver. “The Russian strikes have destroyed hospitals, schools and homes. Also, I really don’t want to give grades to state propaganda, but if you’re going to lie to a kid, maybe ask a less scary man to do it.

“And yet, despite Russia’s efforts to control this narrative, we continue to see protests there,” he continued. “Not only is this war morally indefensible, but the impact of global sanctions is now being felt at all levels of Russian society.”

Unfortunately, as Oliver pointed out towards the end of the segment, Russia’s “human rights abuses” continue in Ukraine. A Russian military strike hit a Kiev suburb on Sunday, killing two children and several other civilians.
